Counselling for Low Self-Esteem

Low self-esteem can have a huge impact on every part of life; how you see yourself, how you relate to others and what you believe you deserve. If you’re feeling stuck in self-criticism, self-doubt and shame, or feeling like you’re not enough, counselling can support you in understanding where these feelings come from, and building a more positive, compassionate relationship with yourself.

Low self-esteem often develops gradually, sometimes without you realising how much it’s impacting your day-to-day life. Perhaps you can’t remember a time when you didn’t feel this way about yourself. It might look like:

  • Negative self-talk or persistent self-criticism
  • Assuming that other people are judging you, or think badly of you
  • Comparing yourself to others
  • Difficulty trusting your own judgement
  • Difficulty recognising your strenghts, or celebrating yourself
  • Difficulty setting boundaries
  • People-pleasing behaviours
  • Over-apologising
  • Fear of judgement or rejection
  • Feeling undeserving of care, rest or having your needs met

These experiences can be all-consuming, exhausting, and isolating. The feeling that everyone else has something you don’t can be deeply painful. However, you’re not alone in feeling this way, and it is absolutely possible for this to change, no matter how far away it may feel for you right now.

Through my integrative approach, I draw on a range of ways to work with low self-esteem, in particular how early relationships and past experiences have shaped how you see yourself today. I have no doubt that you have the capacity for compassion, perhaps you’re even a huge supporter of others, and through our work we can find ways to turn that inward. Together, we might explore:

  • How past relationships influence your self-worth
  • Where, when and how your inner critic developed
  • Patterns that keep you feeling stuck
  • How to develop more compassionate self-talk
  • What confidence and self-worth might look like for you
  • What your boundaries are and how to set them

During sessions this may look like collaborative, creative or experiential work depending on what feels comfortable and supportive for you.

People come to counselling and therapy with low self-esteem for many reasons, these might include:

  • Relationship difficulties
  • Work-related stress, perfectionism or imposter syndrome
  • Difficulty celebrating achievements
  • Growing up in a critical or unpredictable environment
  • Experiences of trauma, neglect or emotional absence
  • Transitions, loss or life changes

Whatever your experience is, counselling can help you rediscover who you are underneath the layers of self-doubt, self-criticism and self-abandonment.
